15 June – 16 July: Research scholarship work at the University of Salzburg, Austria


Mr Kabir Uddin and Sudan Bikash Maharjan both GIS-RS Analysts from MENRIS, ICIMOD were awarded a month-long research scholarship grant at the University of Salzburg which was sponsored by Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research (BMWF). They visited the Center of Geoinformatics (Z_GIS) at the University of Salzburg, Austria, from 15 June to 16 July, 2011. Kabir Uddin did research work on developing indicators to identify forest fire-prone areas in Chitwan National Park, Nepal; while Sudan Bikash Maharjan worked on glacier mapping and change analysis in the Everest Region using the Object Based Image Analysis (OBIA) method.

During their visit, they also attended the International Geoinformatics Forum (GI FORUM) Symposium from 5 to 8 July 2011 at the University of Salzburg, Austria, which was organised by the Centre of Geoinformatics (Z_GIS) of the University of Salzburg in cooperation with the Institute for Geoinformatics Science at the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech). At the conference they presented ICIMOD’s activities and outcomes during the Angewandte Geoinformatik (AGIT)-EXPO exhibition.

They also visited to the eCognition office at Munich, Germany and to have a short meeting with Dr Waldemar Krebs, Account Manager and Caroline Rogg, Training Manager at GeoSpatial Division, Trimble Navigation.
