24 June: Myanmar – ICIMOD Day


The Myanmar ICIMOD Day was jointly organised by the Forest Department, Ministry of Forestry, and ICIMOD on 24 June 2011 in Nay Pyi Taw. More than 100 people including postgraduate students from the Forestry University participated in the programme.

The day was inaugurated with the opening remarks of the Director General of the Forest Department where he highlighted how the mission of ICIMOD is in line with the Myanmar Forest Policy and that Myanmar has been actively collaborating with ICIMOD. He acknowledged that ICIMOD Myanmar Day would provide an opportunity to scale up the ongoing collaborative programme and to identify future priorities and strategic areas for addressing these environmental issues. Dr Eklabya Sharma, Director, Programme Operations of ICIMOD, and Mr Basanta Shrestha, Division Head of Mountain Environment and Natural Resource Information Systems (MENRIS), ICIMOD, highlighted the role of ICIMOD and its strategic focus and future possibilities for cooperation with Myanmar.

In order to identify the priority areas and future collaborative activities between Myanmar and ICIMOD, participants were divided into three discussion groups and they presented the following ways forward for future cooperation. Three area of cooperation identified were 1) biodiversity conservation and management; 2) land cover; REDD and forest management; and 3) capacity building, training, and exchange.
