7 July: China ICIMOD Day held

The China ICIMOD Day was organised on 7 July 2011 in Beijing, China.  More than 30 partners’ representatives attended the event. Mr Yao Tandong, Director General, Institute of Tibetan Plateau, chaired the inaugural session. Dr Andreas Schild, Director General, ICIMOD, welcomed the participants and presented the future outlook of ICIMOD programmes, challenges and opportunities. Mr Cao Jinghua, International Cooperation Office, Chinese Academy of Sciences, was the guest of honour at the inaugural session. In his inaugural address, Mr Cao highlighted the importance of ICIMOD’s mandate and emphasised the need to have closer collaboration with Chinese scientists. Dr. Wei Fangqiang presented a vote of thanks on behalf of the China ICIMOD Committee.

Three key proposals were presented to the China Nature Science Foundation. These focused on the Koshi River basin, rangeland carbon potential in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region, and the Brahmaputra-Salween Landscape Initiative, which was followed by discussions.

Major conclusions from China ICIMOD Day were that ICIMOD sees positive potential for the three proposals and together with our Chinese partners, ICIMOD can contribute in a meaningful way to solving some of the basic issues in the HKH region.
