Since 2008, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in partnership with key UN agencies and international organisations, has been facilitating the development of a Global Adaptation Network (GAN). After an analysis by UNEP's Bangkok office of existing networks dealing with climate change adaptation-relevant topics, it was found that an enhanced knowledge network in the Asia Pacific is essential for effective adaptation, with a need for much greater investment in generating, disseminating, and sharing knowledge in the Asia Pacific region. Based upon a review and a series of consultations, the Asia Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN) was launched as part of GAN. APAN is currently building the knowledge infrastructure of an effective network by mobilising knowledge and technology. ICIMOD has been selected as sub-regional node with emphasis on mountain knowledge. More sub-nodes will be nominated in the latter part of 2011 and will work closely with the Regional Node that is co-hosted by the Asian Institute of Technology, UNEP Regional Resource Centre for AP, and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies.
