Government of India praises its collaboration with ICIMOD

The Press Information Bureau of the Government of India (GOI) has released two important notifications highlighting the India-ICIMOD collaboration. Such notifications from the governments of the regional member countries of ICIMOD project the strengths of collaboration and highlight the importance of a regional organisation like ICIMOD and the growing cooperation between ICIMOD and the Government of India.

Several initiatives for sustainable development of the Himalayan Region have been taken up by the Government of India in collaboration with ICIMOD. These initiatives relate to forestry, watershed management, flood control, water management, biodiversity, beekeeping, sustainable technologies in the field of agriculture and soil conservation, strengthening livelihoods in the mountains through value chain development in the NTFPs sector, sustainable tourism, labour migration, and training and advocacy.

To increase the potential for mutually beneficial research work, enable efficient coordination, and to ensure the sustainability of partnerships between ICIMOD and the Government of India, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by ICIMOD and the Govind Ballabh Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development (GBPIHED) on 25 September 2008, with the approval of the GOI. The mandates of the Government of India in relation to climate change resilience and adaptation are being provided priority under the collaborative arrangement through networking with relevant technical government and non government institutions.

In recent times the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Government of India as Chair of the Board of Governors of ICIMOD, is taking increased interest in the functioning of the Centre and also expressed its commitment to provide financial support to the ICIMOD Foundation.

As a step towards increasing the collaborations and networking between Indian Institutes, agencies and ICIMOD the India-ICIMOD Day is being organised on the 30 September 2011 in New Delhi, India.
