3–6 May: Second Regional Steering Committee Meeting on Regional Flood Information System in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan Region (HKH-HYCOS)


With the objective of developing a framework for a regional flood information system to support disaster prevention and flood management for the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region, ICIMOD in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Finland, jointly organised its Second Regional Steering Committee Meeting from 4 to 6 May 2011. Over 25 participants from Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Nepal, and Pakistan, as well as representatives from WMO, the Government of Finland, and ICIMOD attended the meeting.

The meeting discussed matters related to letters of agreement, the procurement of instrumentation, capacity building of staff of partner institutions and national annual planning, and the proposed database system and regional flood information systems framework with the use of regional synoptic meteorological stations and medium range weather forecasting products. The meeting facilitated the sharing of recent country specific experiences, including in the Pakistan floods in 2010.

The Regional Steering Committee is the highest executive body of the HKH-HYCOS project and its role is to ensure project coherence and oversee project policy, strategy, and implementation. The committee consists of representatives from the participating countries and their executing agencies, ICIMOD, and WMO.
