February: ICIMOD promoting youth and climate action in Nepal


Mr Tek Jung Mahat, APMN Node Manager and ICIMOD’s focal point for youth activities, gave talk on ‘Youth and Climate Change’ in various programmes organised in Kathmandu. This included a workshop on the ‘Role of Youth in Climate Change (5 February) organised by the Rotaract Club of Tripureshwor as part of their new project ‘Youth Initiative for Climate Change’. The programme was attended by some 37 youth with different educational backgrounds from inside and outside the Kathmandu valley.

On 6 February 2011, Mr Mahat was interviewed by Nepal FM as the first expert on their new radio programme ‘Jalabayu Parivartan: Mero Bhawisya Mero Chaso’ (Climate Change: My Future, My Concern). During the programme, Mr Mahat outlined the climate change scenario in Nepal and presented some ways to engage youth in the problem solving process.

On 14 February, Save the Planet, Mission 2020 Nepal celebrated Valentine’s Day with the theme ‘Love the Nature’. The event was held at Kathmandu Durbar Square and attended by over 200 youth, school children, and other interested people. The event was addressed by heads and representatives of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Nepal, Mega Bank, Mr Mahat, former Miss Nepal Sugarika KC, actress Garima Pant, and many other celebrities and social workers.
