4 March: MoU signed between ICIMOD and Forest Resource Assessment Nepal Project

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Forest Resource Assessment (FRA) Nepal Project and ICIMOD. The MoU was signed by Mr Tuomo Kotimaki, Chief Technical Adviser, FRA Nepal Project and Dr Andreas Schild, Director General, ICIMOD on 3 March 2011 in the presence of Dr Madhav Karki, Mr Basanta Shrestha, Dr Bhaskar Singh Karky from ICIMOD, and Mr Pem Kandel from FRA Nepal. The MoU was signed with the aim of joint collaboration and closer partnership in promoting the use of geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technology in the HKH region. Under this MoU, the following activities have been agreed.
  • ICIMOD and the Parties will share and exchange available data and information on RS, Light Detection and Raning (LiDAR), GIS, and maps as well as provide technical backstopping on GIS and RS technology.
  • FRA Nepal will include ICIMOD’s REDD pilot sites for mapping using LiDAR technology.
  • ICIMOD will support the development of an appropriate data sharing platform for stakeholders and the general public.
  • ICIMOD will provide capacity building and training for FRA Nepal in remote sensing and GIS for forestry application.
  • The parties will undertake joint work on the Forest Carbon Tracking Task (GEO-FCT) for Monitoring, Reporting and Verifcation (MRV) system as an REDD mechanism.
