8 March: Celebrating 100 years of International Women’s Day

On 8 March 2011, ICIMOD joined millions of women and thousands of organisations around the world to celebrate the 100th year of International Women’s Day. The day was observed through a series of special events to honour women’s achievements in the Hindu Kush-Himalayas. ICIMOD was especially honoured to have Anuradha Koirala, Chairperson of Maiti Nepal and CNN Hero of the Year 2010, as Guest of Honour and Keynote Speaker. Other events included a special address by Dr Andreas Schild (ICIMOD Director General), welcoming remarks by Dr Ritu Verma (Head of Gender and Governance Division at ICIMOD), our annual International Women’s Day cake-cutting ceremony (this year with a special 30 kg cake, which was shared with Maiti Nepal), a women’s power lunch, and, for the first time, ICIMOD’s Gender Champion Awards (see article in this e-news). Women at the event were welcomed with a ‘khada’ (a Buddhist scarf), a traditional Nepali shawl designed for the occasion, and the popular International Women’s Day poster.
