26 March: ICIMOD participates in ‘Walk for Water'

Fifteen ICIMOD staff were among the hundreds of people who participated in the six-kilometre ‘Walk for Water’ Campaign in Nepal on 26 March 2011. The walk began from Dasrath Stadium and ended at the Khulla Manch. It was organised by Rotary RI District 3292 Nepal and WaterAid to mark the 19th World Water Day with the theme ‘Water for Cities: Responding to the urban challenge’. The event highlighted the importance of water and the need to manage it sustainably. The walk echoed the solidarity of thousands calling for clean and hygienic drinking water, access to drinking water, and the right to drinking water. It also spread the message of water conservation. At Khulla Manch, several invited guests spoke. The Chief Guest, Mr Navin Raj Joshi, Member of the Constituent Assembly, expressed his commitment towards ensuring sanitation and water as fundamental rights in the Constitution of Nepal. An exhibition containing cartoons and messages illustrated the water situation in the valley and created awareness of the value of water. Let’s hope that this event will be followed by a campaign for sustainable water resource management in the days to come.
