12 April: ICIMOD participates in National Plant Resource Day

On 12 April 2011, ICIMOD participated in National Plant Resource Day organised by the Department of Plant Resources, Nepal to celebrate its 51st Anniversary. Mr Yuvaraj Bhusal, Forest Secretary and Chief Guest, inaugurated the event, which was followed by an Exhibition of Plant Resources. Mr Bhusal praised the role played by the Department and its partner organisations.

Sixteen prominent plant resource organisations in Nepal participated in the exhibition. Their stalls displayed materials and publications on biodiversity, biological resources, plant-based drugs, and non-timber forest products. ICIMOD’s exhibit was on the value chain development of sitake mushrooms and timur (Zanthoxylum armatum) and contained posters, photographs, and raw materials showing the steps in the value chain. The display drew a lot of attention from visitors, as did the loca.crude herb samples on display. The exhibit also contained posters and publications on biological, social, and environmental issues in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region, and leaflets and flyers were given away. ICIMOD’s International Year of Forests photo exhibition was another major draw, displaying 30 photographs on various aspects of forests including the threats to forests and their benefits.
