Mark Whitton

Agricultural Economist and Global Lead for Agriculture, Food Security, and Natural Resource Management, Aga Khan Foundation

Mark Whitton is an agricultural economist and Global Lead for Agriculture, Food Security, and Natural Resource Management at the Aga Khan Foundation. For the first 17 years of his career he worked on rural development for the UK consulting company Agrisystems (now Cardno), including long term secondments as a technical advisor and project manager to government departments in India, Cambodia, Philippines, and the Solomon Islands and non-government organizations in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Whitton has worked for the Aga Khan Foundation for over 11 years, with an 18-month break in the Netherlands on a course applying geo-information science and earth observation tools to Water Resource Management. For the last five years, he has worked in the AKF’s Geneva office following earlier assignments with the Mountain Societies Development Support Programme in Central Asia and the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme in India.
