Myanmar Delegation Exposure Visit to ICIMOD and REDD+ sites

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is supporting four countries (Bhutan, India, Myanmar, and Nepal) in the Eastern Himalaya in their efforts to contribute to climate change mitigation through reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, a mechanism widely known as REDD+. ICIMOD has rationalized these efforts in the form of its regional REDD+ Initiative which is working in close collaboration with REDD+ focal points in partnering countries. In Myanmar, ICIMOD is jointly working with the Forest Research Institute (FRI)—a sub-entity of the Forest Department, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MoNREC). An important aspect of ICIMOD’s regional REDD+ Initiative is to build capacities of regional stakeholders through South-South learning wherein partners share their knowledge and experiences on issues pertinent to REDD+ in the region.

In the above context, the regional REDD+ Initiative is organizing a meeting with FRI and villagers from Shan State, a REDD+ project area, on 17 July 2017 at its head office in Kathmandu, Nepal. The purpose of the meeting is to provide an opportunity for FRI, an implementing partner of the regional REDD+ Initiative, to showcase its progress on the REDD+ project. The meeting will be followed by a field visit to Chitwan and Lumbini where FRI staff and community leaders will interact with various REDD+ stakeholders. The field visit is expected to enhance understanding of villagers from Myanmar on community forestry in Nepal.
