Himalayan Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (HCREEE) in the Hindu Kush Himalaya under development

ICIMOD and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), with financial support from the Austrian Development Agency, are preparing to establish the Himalayan Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (HCREEE) to help address complex energy poverty related development challenges faced mostly by rural populations in HKH mountains. A consultative preparatory process for the creation of this centre was launched on 27 July 2016.

The HCREEE preparatory phase envisages the development of the project document on the technical programme and institutional design of the centre based on the consultative need assessment and feasibility study that is being undertaken by an international consulting company in each HKH country using both a questionnaire survey with key stakeholders and a country stakeholders’ consultative workshop.

Once established, the centre will act as a regional hub of Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL)  excellence in the HKH by complementing and strengthening ongoing national activities in the areas of technology demonstration, investment and promotion, rural development and implementation of energy policy, development capacity, knowledge and data management, as well as awareness raising for adapted sustainable mountain energy solutions through regional exchange and methodologies.

The centre will be part of the Global Network of Regional Sustainable Energy Centers (GN-SEC) which is coordinated by UNIDO in partnership with regional organizations. The network is currently supported by more than 89 energy ministers and/or heads of government in all parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, the Caribbean, the Pacific, and Central America, and their work and services are highly valued in the context of the implementation of the SDGs and the Paris Climate Agreement.
