Understanding Climate Change and Enabling Climate Actions in the Hindu Kush Himalaya

Kathmandu, Nepal

11 - 13 April 2017

Ministry of Population and Environmen (MoPE), the IPCC and ICIMOD are organizing a joint event entitled, “Understanding Climate Change and Enabling Climate Actions: with special focus on the mountain systems of the Hindu Kush Himalaya”. The primary objective of the event is to foster cooperation among participating countries by raising awareness about climate change and to enable climate actions with the particular focus on the mountain systems of the HKH region by encouraging climate investments and through mutual learning and sharing. The event will include selected youth in order to sensitize to these important environmental issues and will have sessions for interaction with business leaders, mountain communities, and the local scientific community. The specific objectives are as follows:

  • To raise awareness, especially among policy makers, about the outcomes of the AR5 and the Himalayan Monitoring and Assessment Programme (HIMAP) of ICIMOD and to demonstrate how climate change impacts and will affect the region. We will also highlight potential solutions to the challenges of climate change;

  • To raise awareness, especially among policy makers and the scientific community from the region, about the AR6 cycle work plan, IPCC priorities of the IPCC, and the state of Nepal’s climate smart development. ICIMOD will also share its strategic priorities for combating climate change in the region;

  • To enlist the participation of the local science and research community including indigenous mountain communities  in climate research and encourage regional contributions to future assessments and climate change studies;

  • To foster a better understanding among the news media about climate science, the IPCC’s role, and innovative solutions for climate change as it affects vulnerable mountain communities; and

  • To present key findings of climate change studies and enable climate actions among students, civil society, business sector representatives and youth groups.
