Permafrost Field Expedition to Yala, Langtang Valley, Nepal

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in collaboration with the University of Zurich, the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF), Kathmandu University, and Tribhuvan University, carried out a field expedition in Langtang Valley, Nepal. The purpose was to install high precision loggers to monitor ground surface temperatures (GST), and enhance the capacities of ICIMOD and partners in the HKH, especially those working with environmental monitoring systems related to high mountain processes and natural hazards.

  • Install rock and debris GST loggers in the rock glacier and near Yala Glacier
  • Download data from existing GST loggers on Yala ridge
  • Conduct differential GPS survey of the rock glacier
  • Conduct UAV flights to generate a high resolution DEM of the rock glacier
  • Use different types of high resolution photos to generate a 3D image of the rock glacier
