ICIMOD has been celebrating International Day for Biological
Diversity every year on 22 May. The theme this year is ‘Mainstreaming
Biodiversity: Sustaining People and their Livelihoods’. Biodiversity contributes
to both local livelihoods and national economy. It sustains livelihoods and
life itself. The rural poor in many countries are highly dependent on
biodiversity for food, nutrition and health. About forty percent of the global
economy is based on biological products and processes.

the concerned department will prepare a poster exhibition on the theme.
- Knowledge Forum on "Mainstreaming Biodiversity: Sustaining People and Their Livelihoods"
- Organise a blog writing competition on the IDB theme among ICIMOD’s young professionals. An attractive prize will be awarded
to the winner. And, here is the blog that won the competition.
- Support and participate in the event organized by
the Nepal government: The government will celebrate IDB 2016 in Ranmamaikot,
Rukum district. The event will coincide with the first day of Pupal Yarsa
Mahotsav and will be inaugurated by President Bidhya Bhandari. A technical
session on yarsagumba will be held on the same day. For this, a seven-member
Technical Committee has been formed under the leadership of Prof Ram Chaudhary,
with members from the Department of Forest, Department of National Parks and
Wildlife Conservation, ICIMOD and Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation,
Government of Nepal. The Technical Committee will work on finalizing the
manuscripts/materials to be presented during the technical session.
- Pakistan country office will be celebrating
International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May 2016 in collaboration with Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC), Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF),
PMAS-Arid Agriculture University, Government of Gilgit Baltistan, Aga KhanRural Support Programme (AKRSP), World Wildlife Fund for Nature Pakistan(WWF-P), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Mountain AreasFarmer Support Organization (MAFSO) and local communities at Skardu.
