Message from the Director General

Promoting mountain products for better livelihoods

11 December 2015

I am very pleased to know that the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs is organizing the International Mountain Day 2015. This year’s theme ‘Promoting Mountain Products for Better Livelihoods’ is very important for the mountains of the Hindu Kush Himalayas and the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh.

Some of the popular high value mountain products found in the CHT include jhum products like foxtail millet, black and brown sticky rice, colocacia, cucurbits, chili, upland brinjal, cotton, beans and other legumes; fruits like banana, jackfruit, orange, guava, and jujube; handicrafts that include hand-weaved products; bamboo and cane products; woodcrafts; processed food products; and other products like cashew nut, coffee, and mushroom.

These products not only support the livelihoods of the farmers, but also contribute to the national economy. Therefore, how we manage the region’s agricultural biodiversity will have a directly bearing on the wide range of high vale mountain products that our farmers cultivate today.

On the occasion of International Mountain Day, ICIMOD reiterates its commitment to promote mountain products for improving lives and livelihoods of mountain people. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners in Bangladesh, particularly the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, in celebrating this important international event.
