International Day for Biological Diversity

(22 May 2010)

Each year, the world celebrates the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) on 22 May to increase awareness of biodiversity issues and help people understand the importance of biodiversity for sustainable development. This year the Day is being celebrated with particular importance as 2010 is also the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB). The theme for the Day is Biodiversity, Development and Poverty Alleviation.

ICIMOD has been advocating for biodiversity conservation and management in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan (HKH) region for decades, and is marking the IYB by participating in and organising several global, regional, and national events. The International Day for Biological Diversity is one of the most important national events and will be celebrated from 22-24 May at ICIMOD’s headquarters in Kathmandu. The Day itself will be marked by a special message from ICIMOD’s Director General, and staging of a street drama on the theme ‘Water and Biodiversity’ by a local youth organisation at three public venues in the Kathmandu Valley -- Patan Durbar Square, Kathmandu Durbar Square, and Ratna Park.

A programme will be organised at the Centre on 24th May. The winners of the ‘ICIMOD Photo Contest on Mountain Biodiversity’ will be announced and the photographs exhibited; a draft summary from the ongoing e-discussion on ‘Biodiversity and Gender’ will be shared; and the regional ‘HKH Biodiversity Portal will be launched.

ICIMOD is also promoting the IYB by participating in the Fourteenth Meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) from 10-21 May in Nairobi, Kenya, and the Tenth Conference of the Parties to the CBD from 18-29 October in Nagoya, Japan.
