Facilitators Profile

Robert Powell is a UK-based communications consultant who helps the media, NGOs and governments to provide timely, useful and actionable information to the most vulnerable people in society. He also helps these agents of change listen to and respond to the concerns expressed by those who are fighting for survival. Robert has 35 years of experience working in journalism and communications throughout the world.

He began his career as a correspondent for Reuters news agency. Robert spent 16 years reporting on all aspects of life, ranging from politics, business and conflict to environmental, development and humanitarian issues in Latin America, Africa and Portugal. He went on to become Business Editor of The Herald newspaper in Glasgow Scotland for eight years.

Robert subsequently returned to the international scene as Managing Editor West Africa of IRIN, a humanitarian news agency covering the world’s forgotten crises and conflicts from the perspective of the people living through them. Since 2005, he has worked as a free-lance consultant, training journalists and designing and managing media development projects in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Over the past five years, Robert has increasingly specialised in projects promote two-way communication between communities affected by natural disasters, conflict, climate change and poverty and agencies that are helping them achieve a better quality of life. These assignments have taken him to Nepal, Bangladesh, India, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Niger and Haiti. He can be reached at .
