Governance

Good governance is crucial for resource management across levels – local, national, regional and global. From better use of remittances at the household level to implementation of payment for ecosystem services (PES) schemes at the community level, ICIMOD explores and promotes possibilities for regional cooperation across landscapes and river basins, with the dual objective of conserving natural resources while improving rural lives and livelihoods in mountain areas.
ICIMOD’s research focuses on enhancing the understanding of current governance structures in natural resource management, including access and benefit sharing of critical livelihood resources such as water, biodiversity, and rangelands. It examines the relationship of governance structures to poverty, livelihoods, and economic growth. It also promotes the creation of institutional structures, with the help of partner organisations, to ensure equitable benefit sharing and collective marketing of value-added products to fetch better prices.
