45th Board of Governors (BOG) Meeting Field Visit

ICIMOD organized its 45th Board of Governors (BOG) meeting in Islamabad, Pakistan from 24-29 November 2014. The BOG meeting began with a three-day field trip to Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) with the support of Aga Khan Rural Support Program (AKRSP), FOCUS and the local government. Federal and provincial parliamentarians, politicians and heads of partner organizations such as Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC), AKRSP, and FOCUS joined ICIMOD delegates on the field visit. The visit began with a general overview of the area by Abdul Malik, General Manager of AKRSP, followed by a visit to Toshi Community Game Reserve, Trophy Hunting Initiative of Wildlife Department  , Chitral. Board members interacted with community leaders and learned how community-based conservation efforts and good local governance can ensure the success of a conservation initiative. 

First day concluded with a dinner hosted by,Fateh-Ul-Mulk Ali Nasir, Mehtar (king) of Chitral, in his palace, where he discussed climate change and social issues of Chitral with all ICIMOD guests.,Seerat Asghar, Chair of the ICIMOD Board, and Dr David Molden, ICIMOD’s Director General, showed their appreciation for his hospitality by presenting him with a souvenir from Nepal. 

Second day, the field visit was extended to Parwak/Sonoghore and Reshun valley in upper Chitral. The delegates visited villages affected by Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) and held intensive interactions with local communities. This gave them a very good understanding of local level disasters and vulnerability of local communities. In a unique gesture of hospitality, the locals entertained the delegates by playing a Polo match.

Third day, delegates visited the Institute of Technology and Skill Development (ITSD), the only institute in the Chitral region that offers hands-on training to local youth. The institute was recently established with the support and technical backstopping of AKRSP and ICIMOD. The field visit concluded with an interaction with a leading local honeybee producer trained with ICIMOD’s support.
