Visit of Australian Senator and Ambassador


On 25 November 2014, Senator Brett Mason, Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Government of Australia, and His Excellency Glenn White, Australian Ambassador to Nepal, briefly visited ICIMOD to learn about ICIMOD’s ongoing cooperation with the Government of Australia. Other members of the delegation included Dr Arthur Chenkroff, Adviser to the Senator, Peter Kakogiannis, Policy Officer, Sarah Boddington, First Secretary, Development Cooperation, Australian Embassy, and Tara Gurung, Director of Development Policy and Programs, Australian Embassy.

Basanta Shrestha, ICIMOD’s Director for Strategic Cooperation, briefed the dignitaries about ICIMOD and its activities in the RMCs, while Dr Eklabya Sharma, Director of Programme Operations, provided an overview of the partnership between the Government of Australia and ICIMOD, with particular reference to Sustainable Development Investment Portfolio (SDIP) and the Koshi Basin Programme. ICIMOD staff representing the various thematic areas, regional programmes/initiatives and the Strategic Cooperation unit also attended the meeting.  

Senator Mason said that he was pleased with ICIMOD’s good work, especially its contribution in promoting regional cooperation in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region. He was mainly interested in topics like water, energy and the role of ICIMOD in these areas. 

The Koshi Basin initiative, which falls under ICIMOD’s River Basins programme, is supported by the Australian Government through the Sustainable Development Investment Portfolio (SDIP) for South Asia.
