About 20 participants comprising government officials and community activists from Gilgit Baltistan in Pakistan visited the Taxkorgan Nature Reserve in Xinjiang Province in China. The visit that took place from 15 to 19 September 2014 was supported by the Karakoram Pamir Landscape Initiative of ICIMOD.

Some major objectives of the visit were to enhance learning through exposure and interaction with the officials of the Nature Reserve, learn from China’s conservation and development experience, and build the networking of KPL Pakistan team with Chinese partners to discuss the implementation of the Conservation Strategy in the protected areas of the two countries.

Participants included officials from the home department of Gilgit- Baltistan, officials from the wildlife and parks department, office bearers of Gojal Conservation and Development Association, Shimshal Nature Trust, Shahi Khyber Imamabad Development Organization (SKIDO) Khyber, and the cabinet members of Khunjerab Villagers Organization (KVO).

The team found that pony tracks could be built to tourist hotspots in various valleys in the Khunjerab National Park and KVO project areas to promote ecotourism. Preserving the age-old culture and tradition of the region was found to be important, and consequently the KVO cabinet members have decided to start collecting various cultural and traditional tools, equipment, and attires to set up a museum. The team also realized that there are many business opportunities for the people of KVO and Gojal, particularly in Taxkorgan and generally in the whole Xinjiang province.

The team visited, among others, Harali Goz – a tourist hotspot, Tajik Folk Culture Exhibition Hall, and Tajik Library. Some members also attended the meeting called by the Deputy Commissioner Taxkorgan, Dilmurod Ibrahim. On the fourth day the team visited the Taxkorgan Nature Reserve Office and Wakhghicha Village in Uche Valley.
