From Awareness to Action in SLCPs in Asia

Breakout session

Date: 20 November 2014
Time: 11:00 - 13:00 hrs
Venue: Committee Room C, BMICH, Colombo
Sponsors: Institute of Global Environment Strategies (IGES), Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC)Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), and ICIMOD.

Air pollution and climate change pose a growing threat to sustainable development in Asia. In recent years, research has shown mitigation measures targeting some types of air pollutants offer a cost-effective solution to both air pollution and near-term climate change. These pollutants have since been called short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), reflecting their relatively short atmospheric lifetimes and near-term climate impacts. SLCPs include black carbon, methane, tropospheric ozone and many hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Asia stands to save more lives and money than any other region with the rapid and widespread implementation of SLCP mitigation measures. This session will concentrate on reforms needed at global, national, and city levels to translate growing awareness on SLCPs into scalable actions.

  • To raise awareness about SLCPs (sources) and their mitigation (solutions) and to share success stories in Asia
  • Streamline linkages between global, national, and city level actions and activities on air pollution and climate

Intended Outcome

  • Statement in BAQ plenary outcome document
  • Message to other regional bodies
