ICIMOD expert provides career advice to students

ICIMOD’s Senior Air Quality Specialist, Dr Prakash Bhave, delivered a special presentation about careers in environmental engineering at the British School (TBS) in Kathmandu on 27 August 2014. His talk kicked off the weekly TBS lecture series called ‘Buzz Careers’ in which 15-17 year-old students who are applying to universities and/or selecting their A-Levels subjects receive advice on potential career paths.

About 50 students, along with the school principal, assistant principal, and faculty members from the  science and geography departments, attended the presentation. Dr Bhave described the kind of educational preparation needed for a career in environmental engineering and gave examples from his past and present experience in the profession. In the process, he also provided an overview of ICIMOD’s efforts to reduce air pollution.

Students and faculty were particularly curious to learn about how air quality in Kathmandu compares with other parts of the world and the possible role of black carbon in melting Himalayan glaciers.
