China-ICIMOD Day

Thirty years ago, China was a founding member of ICIMOD and has continued to be instrumental in supporting the Centre’s mission and vision. ICIMOD will continue to emphasize the importance of enhancing and strengthening partnerships in China. Over the last 30 years, China has changed dramatically, and now has one of the fastest growing economies in the world. These changes are reflected in its sustained high economic growth rate, the fact that millions of people have been lifted out of poverty, the decentralization of decision-making processes, advances in science and technology, and an increasing awareness of, and attention to, the environment and sustainability, which has had a great impact internationally as well as regionally. Given the changing context, ICIMOD, as a regional intergovernmental entity with a unique mandate, would like to explore new opportunities for partnerships in China toward sustainable mountain development and to promote regional cooperation.

ICIMOD is working with various national partners in China to ensure that the Centre is responding to the needs and specific priorities of the country in the implementation of MTAP-III. The China–ICIMOD Day is being organized during 19–20 June 2014 in Kunming in close cooperation and support from the CN-ICIMOD Committee and Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB, CAS) with the following key objectives:
  • To provide a platform for mutual learning, sharing, and networking opportunities among the national partners in China with regard to ICIMOD programme implementation;
  • To showcase works of ICIMOD partners in China for improved coordination and increased visibility and ownership; and
  • To strengthen ICIMOD’s engagement and enhance partnerships to mobilize support for sustainable development challenges and regional cooperation in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region.
