World Environment Day 2014


World Environment Day (WED) is considered to be the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. Environmental activities that take place year-round culminate as WED on the June 5. WED was first celebrated in 1972, and over the decades it has become an important vehicle through which the UN raises global awareness and encourages positive action for the environment.

The theme for this year is Small Island Developing States (SIDS), with the slogan “Raise Your Voice not the Sea Level”

Barbados, a Caribbean island at the cutting edge of the fight against climate change, will host this year's World Environment Day (WED) global celebrations on 5 June 2014, according to a joint announcement made today by the government of Barbados and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). ICIMOD joins this great celebration by organizing some interesting and meaningful activities at the Centre and in our regional member countries of Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan.

  1. ICIMOD is supporting the initiatives of the lead government agency,  Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MoEST), Government of Nepal for the WED celebrations.
  2. Participate in the Laxmi Bank Nepali Times Eco Fair 2014 organized by Himalmedia Pvt Ltd, 5-7 June 2014, Bhrikuti Mandap, Kathmandu
  3. Inter-School art competition in collaboration with Children for Green New Nepal (CGNN). The art modules will be displayed at ICIMOD's stall at the Eco fair, Bhrikuti Mandap.
  4. Environment Awareness Rally in collaboration with CGNN involving over 700 students from 14 schools
  5. Fashion Show with difference: a showcase on two different concepts based on WED 2014 theme and 3R concept(recycle, reduce and reuse). Twelve models of Nepal (Miss Earth) will participate in the fashion show that will take in Basantapur Durbar Square, Kathmandu from 9:30 am to 2 pm, also organized by CGNN.


Bhutan Media and Communication Institute (ICIMOD's knowledge partner in Bhutan) will hold an art competition for students from the schools of traditional arts. The goal is to create awareness among the participating schools and artists about the theme and the importance of raising our voice against climate change and environment issues.


Empower Consultancy is organizing an Environment/Biodiversity Awareness Campaign to provide biodiversity education to school children and the general public. Similarly a discussion will be organized on the same topics among 20--25 invited school children. A short study of species richness will be carried out at the experimental plot that has been designed in the national park.


Pakistan Country Office, in collaboration with WWF, Social Economic and Environmental Development and Central Karakorum National Park, Pakistan, is organizing a nature walk and cleanup campaign in Naltar valley with active participation of school children and representatives of environmental organizations. The campaign will engage students from schools of Gilgit city and surrounding places to raise youth awareness about the role of students in environmental conservation and associated themes.
