ICIMOD’s Second Annual Regional Atmospheric Science (SARAS) Workshop, to be held in the resort town of Pokhara, Nepal, on 7 – 9 June 2014, continues the work started by the First Annual Regional Atmospheric Science (FARAS) workshop that took place at ICIMOD Headquarters on 13-14 June 2013, following the International Workshop on Atmospheric Composition and Asian Monsoon (ACAM). The first workshop brought together scientists with research interests in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region to discuss potential areas of collaboration.  ICIMOD is an intergovernmental institution with eight member countries spanning the HKH region: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan. It has a mandate to increase the wellbeing of people in the region.  SARAS has been scheduled to take place following the tutorial workshop on Weather Research and Forecast (WRF-Chem) that ICIMOD is hosting on 1-5 June 2014 in Kathmandu.   

Workshop Objectives

  1. To present and share research on key atmospheric science topics within and upwind of the HKH region, including emissions, atmospheric composition, atmospheric chemical and physical processes, and impacts of atmospheric change relevant to the HKH region,
  2. To encourage collaboration among atmospheric scientists working across the HKH region
  3. To identify gaps in atmospheric research in the HKH region and discuss potential future collaborations.

Meeting Schedule and Location

5 June 2014: Arrival in Kathmandu. Overnight stay in Kathmandu. 

6 June 2014: Overland travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara (6 hours driving time) with enroute stops.

7 to 9 June 2014: SARAS workshop in Pokhara.

10 June 2014: Overland travel back to Kathmandu.

11 June late night, or 12 June: Return to home country.
