A training for observers and gauge readers was organized from 19–20 March in Dhankuta by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Nepal, with the support of ICIMOD. A total of 20 gauge readers and observers from Dhankuta, Barhabise, Mulghat, Turkeghat, Jiri, Tumligtar, Chatara, Pachuwarghat, Sindhuli, Devghat, Rajaiya, and Karmaiya hydrometeorological stations participated in the training. The gauge readers were mainly from the Koshi Basin in the eastern part of Nepal where 11 hydrometeorological stations have been upgraded by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology under the project ‘Establishment of a regional flood information system in the HKH region (HKH-HYCOS)’, which is being implemented by ICIMOD in cooperation with World Meteorological Organization and regional partners from Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Nepal, and Pakistan and funded by the Government of Finland.

The objective of the training was to update the knowledge of the gauge readers regarding real-time data collection and the operation and maintenance of the equipment installed at the stations. The training included theory, group work, and a field visit to Mulghat station, which was installed under the HKH-HYCOS project. The training emphasized the importance of good quality data, in which the gauge readers have an important role to play. The training helped build the capacity of the gauge readers to understand the technical details of data collection and transmission and enabled them to recognize and rectify technical problems in the field. It also provided them with a platform to share their knowledge and experience with each other. The gauge readers said that the training has made them more confident in their work and recommended that such training be held annually.
