Professor Hidetomi Oi, President of the International SABO Association, Japan, visited the ICIMOD Knowledge Park at Godawari on 31 December 2013 to observe the prototype of Community Based Flood Early Warning System (CB FEWS). Prof Oi had earlier introduced FEWS technology to ICIMOD through a programme under Japan International Cooperation Agency.

A team of officials from ICIMOD and Sustainable Eco Engineering Pvt. Ltd. accompanied Prof Oi to the Park. The team briefed him about the modifications made to the CB FEWS technology and its successful implementation along the Singora and Jiadhal rivers in Assam, India. They also shared experiences from the communities and discussed technical issues for his inputs.

The prototype was designed and tested at the Knowledge Park for six months before it was installed along the Singora and Jiadhal rivers. The installation was carried out under the Himalayan Climate Change Adaptation Programme (HICAP)  to minimize flood risks and enhance adaptive capacity of the communities in the Eastern Brahmaputra basin.

“I am very happy to learn that this technology has reached the local communities, and I am sure this will save lives and livelihoods from the impact of floods,” said a visibly elated Prof Oi.
