As part of its commitment to engage the private sector in its activities, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) fielded two staff members to attend the international consultative workshop on ‘Energy Cooperation, Climate Change and Water Management: Initiatives for Regional Integration’ on 12 December 2013 in Kathmandu, Nepal.

The South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) organized the workshop.

ICIMOD’s Senior Glaciologist Dr Dorothea Stumm made a presentation on the effects of climate change in SAARC region during one of the technical sessions. Members of Water, Climate Change and Energy Council of SAARC, and representatives of hydropower companies from the SAARC member countries attended the presentation. Several questions were raised on the impact of climate change on hydropower projects and the role the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry could play for the region.

Mr Umakant Jha, the Minister of Energy, Government of Nepal, inaugurated the workshop. Secretary General of SAARC Mr Ahmed Saleem Sahney was also present at the event.
