HKH universities meet in Pakistan

With the aim to engage the existing and possible new members in the Himalayan University Consortium (HUC), the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in collaboration with COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) hosted a regional seminar and workshop in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

The event, titled ‘Strengthening Educational and Research Collaboration among the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) Universities for Promoting Sustainable Mountain Development in the HKH region’ was held on 28 and 29 October 2013 at CIIT.

The workshop sought to bring together the current HUC member universities and to discuss the demand and need for HUC and the types of activities it must organize in the context of developing joint research and education programmes on Sustainable Mountain Development Science (SMDS).

The meeting also served as a platform to renew the relationship with the current members of HUC and to identify potential new members through an inclusive consultation process.

The participating universities drafted a new strategy and bylaws for working together on research and knowledge generation to support, among others, sustainable livelihoods of the poor and marginalised people of the Hindu Kush–Himalayan countries.

HUC’s new strategy stresses the role of innovative and collaborative research and the need to develop communication strategies to promote the uptake of research results in policy and practice. ICIMOD will play a pivotal role in coordinating and steering the programme.

The strategy and bylaws will be finalized through a consultative process during the 2014 HUC annual meeting at Lanzhou University in China.
