A team from ICIMOD visited Bhutan from 3 to 12 August 2013 to start the implementation of the Letter of Agreement (LoA) that the Royal Government of Bhutan and ICIMOD signed in July this year for the Bhutan part of the Kanchenjunga Landscape Conservation Program Initiative (KLCPI)

The team called on the new Minister for Agriculture and Forests, Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji, and briefed him about the KLCPI. The team also briefed the ministry’s Secretary Dasho Sherub Gyaltshen (Member of ICIMOD’s Board of Governors) and the Director General of Department of Forests and Park Services, Chencho Norbu.

In Thimphu the team held a meeting with the officials of the Wildlife Conservation Division (WCD), the implementing partner. A full time focal officer for the KLCPI was subsequently designated by WCD. The meeting proposed an alignment for a new conservation corridor to connect the Toorsa Strict Nature Reserve to the Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary.

The meeting decided that Program Steering Committee for KLCPI and working teams for Feasibility Assessment and the Conservation Strategy (CS) will be formed by the end of August 2013. The draft Feasibility Assessment Report (FAR) will be ready by the first week of December 2013. The working teams for Comprehensive Environmental Monitoring Plan (CEMP) and Regional Cooperation Framework (RCF) will be formed by the end of September 2013.

The new conservation corridor is likely to fall under the jurisdictions of the Forest Divisions of Gedu and Samtse and the Toorsa Strict Nature Reserve (TSNR), Haa. Hence, the team and officials from WCD visited the Divisions and TSNR. The officials were informed of their roles in the Programme, and consultations held with them in the finalization of alignment of the new conservation corridor and the preparation of FAR, CS, CEMP, and RCF.
