In a bid to build institutional capacity and competence for sustained cryosphere monitoring, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) organized a 12-day study tour to Norway from 10 to 12 August 2014.

Ten professionals from ICIMOD and regional partner institutes of Cryosphere Monitoring Project toured the glacier sites monitored by the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE). NVE, which manages energy and water resources in Norway, is an important actor both in national and international climate research. It has 60 years of mass balance measurements at Storbreen in Jotunheimen.

The tour also provided opportunity to discuss future collaboration of regional cryosphere monitoring in the Himalayan Hindu Kush region and develop synergy between ICIMOD and NVE.

Professionals from Pakistan Meteorological Organization, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology in India, Water and Energy Commission Secretariat of Nepal, Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM)Tribhuvan University (TU) and Kathmandu University (KU) participated in the study tour.
