With the aim to engage the existing and possible new members in the Himalayan University Consortium (HUC), the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) conducted a one-day consultation in Pakistan.

The event titled Himalayan University Consortium Consultation Meeting: Scoping of Education and Research by Selected Mountain Universities in Pakistan was held on 18 July 2013 at ICIMOD Pakistan Office, NARC Campus in Islamabad.

The consultation sought to bring together the current Pakistan HUC member universities and prospective new members to discuss the demand and need for HUC and the types of activities it must organize in the context of developing joint research and education programmes on Sustainable Mountain Development Science (SMDS).

The meeting also served as a platform to renew the relationship with the current members of HUC and to identify potential new members through an inclusive consultation process. Representatives from seven universities participated in the meeting.

A questionnaire prepared by ICIMOD was shared with the participating universities. The survey of selected universities based in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region is part of a scoping study conducted by ICIMOD to reposition the Himalayan University Consortium.

The survey was designed to assess the extent to which universities in the HKH region are addressing the critical and emerging mountain issues facing the region through education, research, policy advocacy, and other relevant programmes and activities.
