A group of eight ICIMOD staff was trained in various aspects of development communications in Arendal, Norway.

The five-day training, from 24 to 28 June 2013, was part of the communication and outreach component of Himalayan Climate Change Adaptation (HICAP), a collaborative initiative aimed at contributing to enhanced resilience of mountain communities, particularly women, through improved understanding of vulnerabilities, opportunities, and potentials for adaptation.

The training was conducted by UNEP GRID-Arendal at its premises in Arendal, Norway, with the aim to further streamline the communication flow within HICAP and define roles and responsibilities of each member of the wider communications team at ICIMOD and Grid-Arendal. Participants also shared best practices and strategic skills amongst themselves.

The HICAP communication strategy was approved by the three promoter organizations of ICIMOD, CICERO, and Grid-Arendal. Participants also discussed strategies to implement the goals outlined in the communication strategy.

Some specific training modules included web production, cartography, and multimedia including video, photography, and interactive web applications. Grouped into teams, participants charted out HICAP branding and the framework for a biannual newsletter. As part of the branding process, a template for power point presentation was developed for HICAP. The workshop agreed to implement HICAP branding across all HICAP publications including an updated map of the HICAP region.

The event also served as a precursor to the HICAP Annual Review and Planning Workshop with promoters, scheduled for August 2013 in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Eight Knowledge Management and Communication staff of ICIMOD working with HICAP, Koshi Basin Programme, and Kailash Sacred Landscape participated in the training.
