A new Japanese satellite receiving station was inaugurated at ICIMOD on Sunday by Shinichi Mizumoto of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), José Achache, Executive Director of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), and Andreas Schild, Director General of ICIMOD. The satellite receiving station has a high speed communication link and will receive data from satellite systems in Japan, India, Thailand, Taiwan and Korea, especially to guide response efforts in emergency situations like floods and where the communication infrastructure is poor. The system is the first of a series being set up in South Asia.

The inauguration was held to coincide with a workshop on ‘Space-based information for disaster preparedness and risk management’ being held from October 2-3 at ICIMOD, Kathmandu. More than 40 disaster management experts from the eight countries of the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region are participating with international experts in the workshop, which aims to promote space-based information for disaster preparedness and risk management in the region.

In the words of Mr Basanta Shrestha, Head of the MENRIS Division at ICIMOD, “The commissioning of the Japanese satellite receiving station will augment our ability to access satellite data on a real-time basis and process them for rapid response mapping support in the region – as done recently during the Pakistan floods. Other products focused on floods will also be made available to support effective disaster management in the region”.

Dr Amarnath Giriraj added that ICIMOD has played a major role in providing rapid response mapping support with daily updates on the extent of the floods and initial damage assessment on Pakistan floods. The efforts were much appreciated by agencies in Pakistan and other international partners.
