Patrick Wagnon

Visiting Scientist

Water and Air

Dr Patrick Wagnon joined ICIMOD in September 2012 as a visiting scientist in the field of glaciology. He is a research scientist at IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, France). He defended his PhD thesis in April 1999 at the University of Grenoble, dealing with the energy balance at the surface of a Bolivian glacier, and with the relationship between tropical glaciers and climate. Since 2002, he was responsible for a research observatory for glaciers (GLACIOCLIM, GLACIers as Observatory of the CLIMate), the aim of which is to study glaciers as climatic indicators, in various regions of the world (from the tropics to polar regions). He has been working for more than 15 years on Andean glaciers with local partners, studying processes driving the melting of glaciers and snow cover. Since 2002, he has been developing a research programme in India, and since 2007 in Nepal with local institutions, to survey Himalayan glaciers where field data such as mass balance over a long term, or energy balance are strongly missing.
