For the first time, ICIMOD will be hosting an intern from the prestigious World Food Prize Borlaug-Ruan International Internship Programme. The programme provides exceptional high school students the opportunity to work with world-renowned scientists and policy makers at leading research centres in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

In the Summer of 2013, 22 interns have been selected to travel to Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Mexico, Nepal, Peru, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, and Turkey to get a firsthand view of pressing food security and nutritional problems in poverty-stricken areas. They will also take part in ground-breaking field and laboratory-based research.

As part of this programme, Valerie Gamao from Texas, USA will join ICIMOD as an intern from 15 June to 22 August. During her tenure at ICIMOD, Valerie will be working closely with ICIMOD’s Water and Air Theme Leader, Dr Aditi Mukherji. She will be involved in a household survey on access to drinking water and the role of groundwater in the Kathmandu Valley.
