Field missions

  • Dr Patrick Wagnon, IRD researcher, joined ICIMOD’s Cryosphere Team as a visiting scientist for a four-year period. He carried out a field expedition to Changri Nup Glacier and Mera Glacier in Nepal 3--26 April 2013.
    • Mera Glacier (Hinku Valley, Nepal; monsoon climate): This debris-free glacier has been monitored since 2007, initially under a collaboration between IRD and the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Nepal, and later including ICIMOD.
    • Changri Nup Glacier (Khumbu valley, Nepal; monsoon climate): This debris-covered glacier has been monitored since 2010 under a joint IRD--Ev-K2-CNR--NAST--ICIMOD collaboration.
  • Dr Dorothea Stumm, ICIMOD, and professionals from Kathmandu University participated in an expedition to Yala Glacier, Langtang Valley, Nepal 2--12 May 2013. The field expedition was organized by the Institute for Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Tribhuvan University. The expedition team conducted glacier mass balance measurements and maintenance of automatic weather stations. ICIMOD and its Nepali partners conducted measurements under the framework of the Cryosphere Monitoring Project in collaboration with the Institute for Tibetan Plateau Research. <more>
