Basanta Shrestha was awarded a Masters in Engineering in Computer Science from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand in 1989 and a Bachelors in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1985 from Madras University, India. He joined ICIMOD in 1990 and is now Head of the Mountain Environment and Natural Resources Information System Division (MENRIS). He has extensive managerial experience and has played an instrumental role in promoting modern decision support tools, technologies, and methodologies for improved access to natural resources and environmental data and information in the Hindu-Kush Himalayan (HKH) region and beyond. He has helped to mobilise resources and has planned, developed, managed, and implemented a number of programmes related to mountain development policies and practices. He has a wealth of experience in networking with partners in the region and key individuals and institutions around the world, and led ICIMOD’s highly successful GIS capacity development programme for planning and decision support for sustainable mountain development. He has led numerous projects and published a number of publications on issues of integrated development planning, the impact of climate change on Himalayan glaciers, a Himalayan atlas, and environment assessment and natural resources management. His current area of focus is on GIS and RS application in the field of climate change in the Himalayas, mountain ecosystem modelling and protected area management, spatial decision support systems, and spatial data infrastructure in the Himalayas.
