ICIMOD at COP26

A couple of weeks have passed since the conclusion of UNFCCC COP26 in Glasgow, and we have had some time to process and evaluate our participation in this significant conference. This year, we were engaged in a number of activities at COP26, including hosting a high-level panel which brought together representatives from our Regional Member Countries (RMCs) and partners from around the world. All in all, I am happy to report that COP26 was an important and successful event for the HKH and for ICIMOD.

COP26 was important for the region in that we were able to amplify our region’s visibility and importance more than ever before.

COVID-19 and green recovery in the Hindu Kush Himalaya

The COVID-19 and climate crises are monumental global challenges. But when tackled in tandem through the prism of sustainable and resilient development, they can create opportunities for policymakers, the public and private sectors, and the civil society to support rapid and inclusive recovery from COVID-19 by using climate action framed around the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Climate priorities and action in the Hindu Kush Himalaya

In the truest of senses, the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) is the pulse of the planet. Being on top of the world, changes happen here before they happen anywhere else. The HKH countries have made commitments and put in place instruments to mitigate and adapt to the changing climate. The availability and mobilization of finance is pivotal in meeting mitigation and adaptation goals, but they must be available in time and in quantum to the needs.

Land cover of HKH region

Land cover change is a significant contributor to environmental change. The degradation of forests and conversion of natural areas, forests, and farmlands to other land use impact ecosystem services and biodiversity significantly. Using multiple methodologies and input data sources, national agencies in different countries of the Hindu Kush Himalayan region have conducted land cover mapping at various times. Due to the differences in classification schema, methodologies, and input data sources used, currently available land cover data is not suitable for analysis of land cover changes over time.

Hydraulic ram pumps for alternative irrigation water supply in cold, arid climate zones

In Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, canal intakes from glaciers are becoming disconnected because of accelerated glacial melting, thereby causing a shortage in the supply of irrigation water to cultivated lands. Since much of the arable land in Gilgit-Baltistan is located at a higher altitude than rivers, alternative water-lifting (such as the hydraulic ram pump) and efficient irrigation technologies (drip irrigation) are required to extend the agriculture base along the elevated riverbanks.
