Earth observation science and applications for risk reduction and enhanced resilience in Hindu Kush Himalaya region: A decade of experience from SERVIR

Earth observation science and applications for risk reduction and enhanced resilience in Hindu Kush Himalaya region: A decade of experience from SERVIR

This open access book is a consolidation of lessons learnt and experiences gathered from our efforts to utilise Earth observation (EO) science and applications to address environmental challenges in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region. It includes a complete package of knowledge on service life cycles including multi-disciplinary topics and practically tested applications for the HKH. It comprises 19 chapters drawing from a decade’s worth of experience gleaned over the course of our implementation of SERVIR-HKH – a joint initiative of NASA, USAID, and ICIMOD – to build capacity on using EO and geospatial technology for effective decision making in the region.

Agrobiodiversity in the Kangchenjunga Landscape: Status, threats, and opportunities

Agrobiodiversity in the Kangchenjunga Landscape: Status, threats, and opportunities

The varied agro-climatic conditions of the transboundary Kangchenjunga Landscape support rich agrobiodiversity. However, despite its tremendous social, economic, and ecological significance, agrobiodiversity has been declining in the landscape in recent years. Key factors behind this include changes in people’s food preferences; replacement of traditional crops and varieties by high yielding varieties; commercialization of agriculture; climate change; introduction and promotion of improved breeds of livestock; shortage of fodder resources; and shortage of labour due to out-migration of male members of the household. There is limited documentation of the landscape's agrobiodiversity status, its agro-economic potential, its significance to mountain communities, and potential threats. This publication seeks to fill these gaps by documenting and discussing the status, challenges, and opportunities surrounding agrobiodiversity in the Kangchenjunga Landscape.

The Melamchi flood disaster: Cascading hazard and the need for multihazard risk management

The Melamchi flood disaster: Cascading hazard and the need for multihazard risk management

The Melamchi disaster of 15 June and the following days cannot be attributed to a single factor. It was the result of multiple anthropogenic and climatic factors and processes that occurred at various locations along the Melamchi River.

The Melamchi-Indrawati watershed receives high precipitation, which increases, along with altitude, towards the north. This disaster was initiated by intense precipitation in the upstream areas, which triggered cascading hazards along the river corridors, causing loss of life and extreme devastation to settlements, markets, roads and bridges, and local livelihoods.

Proceedings of the Hindu Kush Himalaya Ministerial Mountain Summit

In 15 October 2020, ministers from the eight Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) countries came together to sign a landmark declaration and endorse the ‘HKH Call to Action to sustain mountain environments and improve livelihoods in the Hindu Kush Himalaya’.
The HKH Ministerial Mountain Summit 2020 was unprecedented in many ways. It resulted in the signing of a historic declaration to strengthen regional cooperation, present a unified voice for the HKH at global platforms, assess the feasibility of establishing a regional institutional mechanism and, most importantly, enhance the uptake of scientific evidence for improving policies in the region. Setting up localized climate services for agriculture in Chitwan

Setting up localized climate services for agriculture in Chitwan

Nepalese farmers have limited access to agricultural extension services and lack the support they need to identify and address crop issues autonomously. Effective agricultural advisory services are vital to address the needs of farmers, help them with decision making and build resilience to cope with climate shocks and environmental change. ICIMOD’s Climate Services Initiative collaborated with the Agriculture Knowledge Centre (AKC) in Chitwan to further enrich advisories, make them more relevant to farmers’ needs and deliver them in a timely manner.
