How do you protect the pulse of the planet?
I protect the pulse of the planet through various contributions, such as my current work on a national land cover monitoring system for Afghanistan. Land cover plays an important role in providing crucial information for studying and monitoring ecosystems and their services for natural resource management. Assessment of land cover dynamics is essential for the sustainable management of natural resources, environmental protection, and food security. The land cover maps are primary data required for various other models including hydrology, ecosystem services, and weather forecast. Since national development plans use land cover as a basis for understanding changes in a country’s natural capital, there are important policy impacts. When effective policies are in place, we can all work together to protect the pulse.
What is your favorite part of the work you do at ICIMOD?
