I provide intellectual leadership in the areas of economics and rural development at ICIMOD, with special attention on regional cooperation, poverty alleviation, sustainable development goals, the food, water, and energy nexus and environmental management.
How do you protect the pulse of the planet?
To protect the pulse of the planet, I generate knowledge on the sustenance of Himalayan glaciers, the region’s ecosystems and water resources by contributing my expertise in the formulation of national, regional and global policies, and by raising mountain-related issues and advocating for their solutions in regional and global arenas. I also brought concerns related to the Hindu Kush Himalaya to the forefront by serving as the Coordinating Lead Author of IPCC Special Report on Ocean and Cryosphere in 2019.
What is your favorite part of the work you do at ICIMOD?
Working on regional issues is what I enjoy most about ICIMOD. Being a regional organization, ICIMOD creates tremendous opportunities to work in all of the eight regional member countries, by understanding their shared issues and challenges and working towards finding solutions with special attention on regional cooperation and integrated development of water, energy and food resources.
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about regional cooperation. I strongly believe that by working together we can address many challenges, including economic development, climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction, while enhancing peace and prosperity in the region.
I hold a PhD in regional and rural development planning from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand and am a national of Bangladesh. Prior to my appointment as ICIMOD’s Chief Economist, I served for more than ten years in positions including Theme Leader of the Livelihoods Theme, Head of the Economic Analysis Division, and Policy Development Specialist. I also worked for more than a decade in the Bangladesh Civil Service in different ministries where I was involved in the formulation and implementation of national policies, plan and programs. Along with development work, I have been actively involved in research in areas that include agriculture, rural development, natural resource management, food security, poverty alleviation, regional cooperation, the food, water and energy nexus and sustainable development in South Asia and Southeast Asia. I have contributed to over 150 papers in books, refereed journals, policy briefs, position papers, and technical reports, including 50 peer-reviewed articles in academic journals. Eight of my journal articles have appeared as the most-read papers in various journals and I am a coordinating lead author of the IPCC Special Report on Ocean and Cryosphere. My research findings have been incorporated in many national and global policy papers and I have also provided policy inputs to a number of ICIMOD’s regional member countries on development issues.
