Chomu Prerna Thapa

Travel & Hospitality Officer/Unit Head, Travel and Hospitality Management Unit

My role at ICIMOD

Since the most gracious possible hospitality is a fundamentally imortant responsibility for all hosts in Nepali culture, our roles in the Travel and Hospitality Unit are also fundamentally important for all of the officials from across all of our member countries who support the Centre, all of our development partners, all of our partners with whom we work, all of our guests who attend our events, all of our international staff who dislocate themselves and their families to serve as ICIMOD staff and all of our locally-based staff. My role is thus to maintain high standards of hospitality for the entire Centre, which means that for each and every event, I and my wonderful colleagues take responsibility for the entire range of logistics. This includes also meetings of the Board of Governors which on a rotating basis take place in different of our RMCs.

Q:

How do you protect the pulse of the planet?

A:

I protect the pulse of the planet starting from my home, educating my family and those near and dear as well as neighbours about avoiding use of plastics, avoiding burning waste that causes pollution, and assuring that whenever I go on family picnics that the place is clean and everyone there helps to clean. This will automatically create an awareness.

Q:

My qualifications

A:

I joined ICIMOD at a young age immediately after completion of my bachelor’s studies from West Bengal, India. I’ve grown here at ICIMOD – got married – have a beautiful daughter and the most precious years of my life have been spent in ICIMOD.

Having joined ICIMOD just out of college, my supervisors at the time saw my ability and gave me an opportunity to help revamp what was the communications unit at that time. I was successful in that and then was asked to work in the Directorate, which taught me many things and helped me to develop and become more professional.

I was then selected for an event management position, which at that time was under the Travel Section. Unfortunately, my immediate supervisor passed away within a year, so no one was there to guide me, but I struggled and learnt about travel and motorpool along with my responsibilities related to events. This struggle helped me to become a strong person and I believe that I am the first person to begin in a secretary position and later to be promoted to a professional level.

When I look back I am proud to see my journey professionally and personally. I love ICIMOD, as it has given me so much and I consider it as my second home.
