SSA - Glaciological Research Associate, Water and Air

My role at ICIMOD

In my role, I support field expeditions to Langtang Valley twice a year, where we collect data and carry out mass balance measurements, discharge measurements, installation of automatic weather stations, ground surface temperature loggers, and timelapse cameras throughout the valley. I am also involved in the processing and analysing this data acquired from the field and organizing and participating in various glaciological trainings in ICIMOD. I am also working on a few scientific topics such as energy balance models and avalanches that could lead to publication.

Q:

How do you protect the pulse of the planet?

A:

I protect the pulse of the planet by contributing to a better understanding of the behaviour of Himalayan glaciers. In the HKH region, almost every study talks about major gaps in this understanding mainly due to insufficient in-situ measurements. Our high altitude expeditions for hydromet data collection and measurements and glacier monitoring and our bi-annual interactions with community people from Langtang Valley have also helped us to gain more understanding about the impacts of climate change and our findings will definitely help in strategic planning to make resilient mountain communities which can later be implemented in other mountainous areas as well.

Q:

What is your favorite part of the work you do at ICIMOD?

A:

A good working environment and supportive colleagues.

Q:

What are you passionate about?

A:

I’m passionate about travelling, exploring new places and indulging myself in various sports activities. Besides these interests, I sometimes love to be in the kitchen.

Q:

My qualifications

A:

I have been working as a Glaciological Research Associate in ICIMOD since soon after the completion of my MS by research in glaciology from Kathmandu University, Nepal. Before this, I had completed my Bachelors’ degree in technology in environmental engineering at Kathmandu University, Nepal.
