Solutions Expo: Mitigating air pollution across the HKH

Venue

ICIMOD headquarters, Kathmandu, Nepal

Date & Time

07 December 2020 to 11 December 2020

The dates may change depending on how the situation unfolds over the coming months. Please check back for updates.

Background

The Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region is vulnerable to increasing air pollution and climate change impacts, accelerated in recent decades, with far-reaching consequences on environmental and human health. In many places, both urban and rural, pollutants have reached alarming levels, threatening the health of millions of people in the region.

Recent assessments, such as ICIMOD’s 2019 Hindu Kush Himalaya Assessment report, have highlighted that mitigating air pollution is important to stabilize global climate and curb warming to under 1.5°C. Failure to do so will have appalling impacts on our atmosphere, glaciers, ecosystems, livelihoods, and health. Pollution and poor urban waste management generate intense interest and debate, and there are many innovative solutions being tried on the ground.

The Solutions Expo

ICIMOD is working with its partners to explore practical, cost-effective, and proven pathways for mitigating air pollution in the HKH through the Solutions Expo. The event will be held at the ICIMOD headquarters in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 25 to 30 May 2020.

Objectives

The Solutions Expo will primarily identify opportunities to enable the transformation of showcased innovations into sustainable development solutions for the HKH region. In addition to the showcasing of technological and management solutions, the event will highlight a range of existing ICIMOD solutions, including agriculture and water management systems.

The Expo will provide a platform for:

  • Exhibition of solutions that mitigate air pollution
  • Exchange of knowledge and experience sharing
  • Business-to-business and business-to-government transactions and collaboration
  • Policy dialogues
  • Showcasing of renewable, efficient, and sustainable energy options, including emission reduction from waste and agricultural residue burning, brick kilns, and industrial and residential emissions
  • Engagement of youths, start-ups, and relevant stakeholders
 Expected outcomes

The cross learnings expected from this event is anticipated to enable practitioners and policymakers learn about, understand, and implement relevant interventions in local contexts. Through the various activities, it is expected to:

  1. Increase public, government, and other stakeholder cross-sector awareness about select techniques and technologies that can serve as potential solutions to air pollution in the HKH region
  2. Foster vital business-to-business and business-to-government partnerships between key stakeholders including the private sector, innovators, and policy makers
  3. Facilitate focused policy dialogues at local, central, and regional government levels towards mitigating air pollution and responding to the many associated issues around air pollution
  4. Accelerate the creation of an enabling environment for the recognition and uptake of solutions at scale to address the challenge of air pollution and the many associated issues around air pollution
