Consultation workshop on impact-based forecasting in Pakistan
25 Nov, 2019 - 27 Nov, 2019, Islamabad, PakistanThe UK Met Office (UKMO), the United Kingdom's national meteorological service, and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) – in collaboration with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Pakistan – are organizing a three-day workshop on impact-based forecasting. The consultation workshop is a key activity of the Asia Regional Resilience to a Changing Climate (ARRCC) programme, which is funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) and builds on initial engagement with the PMD in 2018.
READ MOREProposed joint research programme on understanding and assessing the impact of climate change in the Indus Basin
22 Nov, 2019 - 23 Nov, 2019, Steinberger Hotel, Abu Dhabi, DubaiResearchers from each of the Indus basin countries have been monitoring and analysing their country’s part of the cryosphere for many years, albeit with a large data gap for Afghanistan. As a result of limited coordination between researchers and research across borders, knowledge on the basin’s water resources is fragmented. Despite the obvious merits of cooperation among riparian countries, there has been no initiative so far aimed at developing a synoptic understanding of the Indus water system as a whole.
READ MOREConsultation workshop on establishing advisory services to build farmers’ resilience and enhance agricultural production through collaborative institutional engagement in Pakistan
21 Nov, 2019, Lahore, PakistanClimate change impacts are manifold in Pakistan, because a major segment of the population depends on agriculture. Owing to climate change and variability, weather conditions are now more uncertain both in terms of timing and intensity. Farmers are unable to adapt to these sharp changes and resulting bottlenecks in crop productivity, which ultimately increases livelihood vulnerability.
READ MORETraining workshop on assessing freshwater ecosystems for sustainable hydropower development in Nepal
19 Nov, 2019 - 22 Nov, 2019, Hotel Sarathi, DhulikhelThe Government of Nepal has recently endorsed a hydropower environmental impact assessment manual as a guiding document for environment impact assessment (EIA), in line with international good business practices in the hydropower sector. With the endorsement of the manual, an in-depth capacity assessment and gap analysis has been carried out in Nepal’s hydropower sector, with particular focus on EIA.

18 Nov, 2019 - 22 Nov, 2019, ICIMOD, Kathmandu, NepalLand cover assessment and consideration of its dynamics can underpin sustainable natural resources management, environmental protection, and food security. During multiple stakeholder consultations carried out by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) under its SERVIR Hindu Kush Himalaya (SERVIR-HKH) Initiative, stakeholders identified the need for a land cover monitoring system that produces high-quality land cover maps using a consistent regional classification scheme compatible with national needs.
READ MORETraining on remote sensing and field-based glacier monitoring
16 Nov, 2019 - 20 Nov, 2019, Islamabad Hotel, Islamabad, PakistanICIMOD invites faculty members, graduate students, and early-career scientists from research institutes and universities in Pakistan to apply for a five-day training on field-based glacier monitoring and remote sensing in Pakistan. The training will involve theoretical lectures and hands-on exercises, covering introductions to field-based monitoring methods, instruments required for field work, their application for glacier monitoring, and integration with remote-sensing data.
READ MOREMitigating drudgery for farm women in the mountains through improved tools, technologies, and services
15 Nov, 2019, ICIMOD, KathmanduThe pace at which technology and innovations are advancing worldwide is remarkable. But how these technologies take into account women’s needs, the nature of women’s work, and contextual settings is quite questionable. It is noticeable that compared with women, men are in a position to take advantage of and accrue higher benefits from technological change across all sectors.

11 Nov, 2019 - 26 Nov, 2019, Yala Glacier, Langtang Valley, NepalA team from ICIMOD’s Cryosphere Initiative will head to the Langtang Valley and Yala Glacier for field data collection. The expedition is part of a long-term field data collection project carried out in collaboration with Utrecht University, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (Nepal), Kathmandu University, and the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate.

10 Nov, 2019 - 16 Nov, 2019, Kathmandu, NepalRural communities need water not only for consumption but also for growing crops and rearing livestock. At the same time, water has a destructive potential. Heavy rainfall over short periods can lead to massive erosion of soil, particularly on slopes where the soil is exposed. Rainfall over longer periods can lead to nutrient leaching as well as more catastrophic events like landslides. Water is a scarce commodity and improved water management practices are critical for ensuring the availability of drinking water, production of food, and for improved living conditions.

READ MORETraining on the impact of climate change on the Kabul River basin using the JAMS/J2000 modelling system
07 Nov, 2019 - 16 Nov, 2019, NBlevel2 Meeting hall at New Building, ICIMOD, KathmanduUnderstanding the hydrological dynamics of a river system is crucial for water resources planning and management. In the context of climate change, changing temperature and precipitation patterns are likely to affect the hydrological regime of a river basin. In the Himalayan river basins, snowmelt patterns, glacier melt processes, and evapotranspiration are likely to be affected, which will in turn impact the flow regime and seasonality.
